about
This song is about my personal experiences with a lack of empathy in dangerous situations. The song is essentially about bystander apathy. I didn’t know the meaning of the expression when I started writing the song. However, by the time I finished production, I happened upon an article and realized the importance to this piece. Why is it that bystanders sometimes fail to help when they see someone in danger? I understand what it’s like to be afraid, but sometimes peer pressure can overrule action when witnessing right versus wrong, safety versus danger. We see it in so many scary situations today – online bullying, sexual assault, and racism. When violence is happening in broad daylight, where are the helpers? This song is my way to speak out for people who suffer alone during and after these types of experiences.
lyrics
In broad daylight
I’m watching the clock
Wait for my next free block
Time’s almost up
In broad daylight
They glue their mouths shut
And hide behind books
So they don’t have to know what is
Going on
Between the empty pages of my notebook
Honestly I couldn’t write a word of what’s
Going on
Only I can read between the lines
See the spiraling actions that bind
Every single page of what’s
Going on, going on, going on, going on
Going on, going on, going on, going on
Going on, going on, going on, going on
Going on, going on, going on, going on
In broad daylight
Is a cell of desks and empty chairs
Pencils thrown without care
Hands raised in the air
In broad daylight
Only I know the answer still
Wait for them to learn until
I understand they have no will to know what’s
Going on
Between the empty pages of my notebook
Honestly I couldn’t write a word of what’s
Going on
Only I can read between the lines
See the spiraling actions that bind
Every single page of what’s
Going on, going on, going on, going on
Going on, going on, going on, going on
Going on, going on, going on, going on
Going on, going on, going on, going on
